Councillor Secures Government Intervention In Cladding
FOR IMMEDIATE USE
22nd July 2025
Alex Norris MP, the government minister for Building Safety, has told Councillor David Taylor that a Romford block will be prioritised, following Taylor's complaint.
Councillor David Taylor twice wrote to Alex Norris MP, and lodged complaints with the Building Safety Regulator (BSR), after delays in government prevented two Romford blocks from receiving remediation works.
Residents of the Axis apartments contacted Councillor David Taylor, after contractors paused work to remediate building safety defects. New legislation means that the BSR must sign off major remediation works, though the BSR has been plagued by delays.
Councillor Taylor's complaint to the BSR and Minister highlighted that the delays were unacceptable and were preventing residents from being able to sell their properties or remortgage. Residents also reported increases in insurance costs.
In his letter to Councillor Taylor, the Minister states that "...the BSR have asked [partners] to expedite the review... in view of the delays already encountered and the urgent nature of this application.."
The BSR is expected to make a decision on works by the end of August.
Councillor Taylor said;
"I am thrilled to have secured this action for my residents, after pressing the government and regulator hard for movement.
Residents told me that they hadn't seen much interest in their situation, so I took it upon myself to put pressure on at a national level.
I am also pleased that, after I requested a meeting with Andrew Rosindell MP, his team were able to support me in my campaign and add to the pressure on government. This Cllr-MP partnership shows the strength of working together, as a team, to secure the best outcome for our residents.
I am grateful to Andrew and his team for their support.
I shall continue to keep an eye on what goes on in with this block, to make sure my residents are not left behind".
